THE CYCLADES      MAP

Amorgos, Andros, Antiparos, Donoussa, Folegandros, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Santorini, Syros

Amorgos

NUDE BEACHES

      Agia Anna Beach   36.8214, 25.9059
Although not among the better-known nude beaches of the Greek Islands, this beach is just a short distance from a popular tourist attraction—Moni Chosoviotissa, a monastery that clings spectacularly to the face of a huge cliff.

Andros

NUDE BEACHES

      Delavoyas Beach   37.8483, 24.7905
Nudists and textiles coexist at this small beach just outside the village of Batsi.

Antiparos

NUDE BEACHES

      Theologos Beach   37.0489, 25.0851
At this beach, you'll be greeted by an artistic handmade sign that proclaims "official nudist beach since the '70," which gets its point across even without an "s" at the end. While the claim of official sanction is questionable, Theologos is unquestionably among the best-attended nude beaches in the Cyclades outside Mykonos. Adventurous nudists can wade to a couple of small, deserted islands just offshore from the beach and explore them without a stitch of clothing. Antiparos is an easy day trip from nearby Paros.

Donoussa

NUDE BEACHES

      Kedros Beach   37.0978, 25.8035
Nudists and textiles mix freely along the entire length of this beach. Donoussa has more limited ferry service and tourist amenities than most other developed islands, and it is free of mass tourism. Many visitors are youthful free spirits who come to pitch a tent on the beach and rough it for at least a few days.

Folegandros

NUDE BEACHES

      Agios Nikolas Beach   36.6302, 24.8846
This beach is popular despite a requisite hike of nearly a kilometer, and if you visit in July or August, you may find only a small fraction of beach goers are naked. At other times, there is more of an even nudist and textile mix.

Mykonos
Mykonos, with its whitewashed buildings and thatch-roofed windmills, is well known for its nightlife and for being one of the world's top gay vacation destinations. However, you need not be a partier or gay to enjoy the island and its nude beaches. Of the six beaches below, the first five are all on the south coast and are quite close together—within a span of four kilometers as the crow flies. These beaches can be reached by car or by hiking if you're up for it, but most visitors start at a textile beach called Plati Yialos (a short bus ride from Mykonos town) and from there board small ferry boats called a caïques, which are inexpensive shuttles to the various beaches.

Several decades ago when Mykonos first began to gain notoriety for bare bathing, Paradise Beach was the straight nude beach and Super Paradise Beach was the gay nude beach, and to a certain extent those reputations remain, even though the demographics started to shift as far back as the 80's. Paradise Beach evolved into a mostly textile party beach. Nudity never vanished altogether, but nudists have long been a rather small minority. Super Paradise has likewise changed, and while one end of the beach is still mostly gay, other segments of the beach are attended by straight nudists and textiles. Elia Beach, the most distant of the five beaches, did not gain prominence until the 90's, when nudists began to seek a less crowded alternative to Paradise and Super Paradise, but as more and more tourists have continued to flock to Mykonos, Elia did not remain a quiet alternative for long. At one end of Elia, nudists and textiles mingle among the thatched beach umbrellas, and there is also a tiny, separate micro-cove just around the bend that is more or less an all-gay nudist haunt. The other two beaches among the cluster of five, Paranga Beach and Agrari Beach, have nudist potential, but nudity patterns as those beaches are harder to gauge than at Super Paradise or Elia. The final beach in the list below is Panormos Beach, which is on the windier north coast of the island. It is a quieter alternative to the south coast beaches. If you rent a car or moped, you can find your way to other nooks and crannies with nudist potential in the island's more off-the-beaten-path eastern reaches. Mykonos is not very big, covering a smaller land area than the city of San Francisco.

     Hotel Elysium    37.4415, 25.3309     E

Naxos

NUDE BEACHES

      Plaka Beach   37.0642, 25.3534
This long beach on the west coast of Naxos has two areas where nudists gather: a small niche on the north end just a stone's throw from the nearest taverna, and a larger area near the much more sparsely populated southern end where it is possible to stroll down the beach sans a stitch.

Paros
At the northern end of Paros, there is a prominent inlet called Naoussa Bay. All three nude beaches listed below are along this bay. They can be reached by car, or they can be reached by getting to Naoussa town and taking a ferry boat called a caïque. There is ferry service to points very near all three beaches, although not directly to them. On the east side of the bay, Lageri Beach is the overall most popular of the three beach, although it is the most difficult to reach by car due to a lack of suitable parking. Consider taking the caïque to visit Lageri. On the west side of the bay, there is a tiny beach that seems to lack a proper name but is often called Porto Paros, which is the name of the nearest hotel. If you have a car or moped, you can practically drive all the way to it. Also on the east side of the bay, Monastiri Beach is located on a peninsula that extends into the bay. Whether you arrive by car or by caïque, you'll have to hike about a kilometer to reach it. Monastiri tends to draw a crowd that is significantly but not exclusively gay.

Santorini
Santorini is a small archipelago that is also widely known by the name "Thira," although technically Thira refers only to the main island, where all but 2% of the small population live. Santorini, which isn't much larger than Manhattan in land area, is notable among Greek islands for several reasons. The archipelago was once a much larger single island—that is, until a massive volcanic eruption that occurred about 3,500 years ago. This eruption basically below away the middle of the island, leaving a huge caldera that filled with sea water, giving present-day Santorini its distinctive shape. Santorini is also known for its exceptionally colorful and beautiful villages that cascade down the walls of the caldera toward the sea, with Oia being the most renowned village.

Santorini is further notable as the filming locale of the movie Summer Lovers, which is particularly memorable to naturists for the candid scenes in which Peter Gallagher, Daryl Hannah and the late French actress Valerie Quennessen bask in the buff at a beach full of naked bodies. It is a rare Hollywood film in which nude beach scenes are not used for comedic effect, and it is impossible to watch this movie without dreaming dreams of Santorini, which looks like such a naturist paradise.

Summer Lovers was filmed way back in 1982, nearly three decades ago. Since that time, many Greek islands have seen a dramatic rise in mass tourism, and Santorini is among the top few places tourists want to go. Sadly, throngs of tourists and a thriving naturist scene rarely go hand in hand, with Mykonos being a notable exception. Santorini is no longer the carefree paradise of bare bathers depicted in Summer Lovers. There are two beaches where nudists are known to congregate: Vlychada Beach on the south coast and Koloumbo Beach on the north coast. However, Vlychada rarely has more than a dozen bare bodies, and Koloumbo has even fewer. Santorini is one of those places in the world where the general consensus seems to be "overrun with tourists, but still worth it." From a naturist perspective, the island should not be regarded as a nude beach destination per se, but if you decide to go there just because Santorini is so impossibly gorgeous, you might as well check out its few surviving naked places.

NUDE BEACHES

      Vlychada Beach   36.3417, 25.4294

      Koloumbo Beach   36.4737, 25.4208

Syros

NUDE BEACHES

      Armeos Beach   37.4195, 24.8741
Located in the village of Galissas on the west coast of Syros, this small beach is hidden just around a headland from the village beach, and it has a loyal nudist following.
